PHOTO © TEAM PETER STIGTER SPRING/SUMMER 2015we delivered the sound score for the spijkers en spijkers spring summer 2015 show, which was inspired by singer and dancer joséphine baker, famous for her bananaskirt dance in the roaring twenties in paris.

joséphine, the creole goddess, is one of our all time heroes: she created a sexual revolution, was the first black superstar ever and spread happiness and love throughout her entire life.

the collection was vibrant and colorful, with amongst others, prints and applications of panthers, bananas and miss baker herself.
spijkers en spijkers wanted a modern feel to the show, so we immediately skipped all the great joséphine baker songs and chose for a chic and decadent tropical reggae feel, which had to show major attitude.

we used music which was produced by sly and robbie: grace jones’ ‘walking in the rain’ and marianne faithfull singing serge gainsbourg’s ‘lola r. forever’ were the keytracks. we added one of our new favorite artists hollie cook and music by the likes of tricky, fourma system and the beat masters major hit ‘ska train’. we added extra beats and used samples from musical youth’s ‘pass the dutchie’ and zion train, mad professor and ruts dc’s ‘militant’.
the finale was a mash-up of two versions of ‘you don’t love me (no, no, no)’ originally by dawn penn and later covered by rihanna.

seating music was an endless loop of mad professor’s ‘systematic dub’ which, together with the red, yellow and green rastafari lights, created an easy-going stoned jamaican hammock-on-the-beach feel.
