the collection was based on introspectionism, about exploring post apocalyptic new worlds and fighting the brutal elements of nature on a non-existent planet.
maybe it was an answer to last season’s reviews? their prior spring summer show created an outrage, showing yolo big birds at gay pride korea kind of silhouettes. this time maryme-jimmypaul went much deeper, exploring their inner selves and their true identity.
we love maryme-jimmypaul, they are positive and brave, kicking against the rules and boundaries of fashion and are growing into one of the most special brands on this planet.

the briefing seemed to be sort of vague: maryme-jimmypaul were maybe not sure what it was all about? but at the same time they made a strong statement: we want to boldly go where no man has gone before, leaving the past behind, beaming the brand into the future and creating something which is entirely new.
with artistic director olga belama, choreographers front-row back-stage and stylist robbie bauw on board we made this show rock big time. we used alva noto’s most scary soundscapes as seating music and mixed them with roaring earthquakes. the show was introduced by a distant thunderstorm which came closer … followed by an electric storm, a sudden black out and ferocious lightning. the bass sounds made the venue tremble while smoke and wind machines blew clouds of smoke over the audience, and blew heaps of empty plastic bags over the catwalk …

the mix mainly consisted of tracks from the soundtrack of akira, a cyber punk movie by director katsuhiro otomo, composed by geinoh yamashirogumi. we added loads of sound effects, japanese and african tribal drums, a voice saying ‘traveller’ by bison, some choirs and way more snippets of music we can not ever remember at this point in time and space. but one thing is for sure: it is one of the most special and beautiful mixes we ever made.
the finale was basement jaxx’ ‘where’s your head at’ in a classical version, recorded with the metropole orchestra.

like in any other maryme-jimmypaul-show, the designers did not show their faces at the end. instead they sent their fabulous pr-ladies out on the runway, bewildering the audience even more. nobody knows who mary, me, jimmy and paul are. maybe they do not exist? maybe they don’t know themselves? maybe they are trying to find their true identity for ever, and are part of a nomadic tribe who are boldly going where no man has gone before.
