each designer sent us the music they wanted to hear during their 2.5 minutes of fame, in which they had to show five strong looks. we tried to be respectful to their choice of music as much as possible, but had to cut all up and changed a few things here and there: the flow of the show was most important.

the contestants were the best graduates of the seven major art academies in the netherlands. both the audience and a panel had a 50-50 vote. the panel consisted of matthew stevenson (menswear editor of wallpaper magazine), lotte mostert (designer at hayder ackerman), marlo saalminck (creative and brand consultant) and last but not least: the legendary jo simpson (curriculum leader in fashion at central saint martins).

the dutch department store v&d was this years sponsor and we knew they could take a joke. inspired by the english tv-show ‘are you being served’, we used the worst elevator music éver and mixed a ding-dong sound effect and a voice talking about all kinds of ridiculous stuff (which could fit a classic department store) over the sound track.
the ding-dong effect was used throughout the whole show, gluing the music snippets of the contestants together. the audience votes were picked up accompanied by death by chocolates’ ‘are you being served’. finale music was watermätt’s epic summer 2014 anthem ‘bullit’, mixed with… the ding-dongs of course!

the show was a huge success and got rave reviews. one of our absolute favorites was bastian visch… and he won the award. his collection will be available at all v&d stores next year.
